Everyday morning a man would park his car at a particular location. The man was generous and paid $10 to an attendant to take care of his car. A few years later, the man got married but continued to park his car everyday at the same location. However, something changed. He paid only $5 to the attendant.

A few years later, the man had a couple of kids. The man continued to park his car at the same location everyday. However, he paid only $1 to the attendant.

One day the attendant stopped the man and asked him about the change in behavior. He wanted to know why he only paid him a dollar - a mere 10% of what he used to pay him a few years earlier. The man, of course, had a good explanation for his change in behavior. He said that things were very different when he was a bachelor. Now, he had a lot more expenses and he was careful how he spent his money.

The attendant shook his head and quipped "Sir, this is not fair. You are using my income to take care of your family."

We believe that public relations practitioners have a unique perspective on social media. We look at social media as an extension of the conversations we have always had with journalists and stakeholders to now include a much larger group of citizen journalists and interested people whose online conversations lead to the formation of communities of interest.

First Monday and First Tuesday will provide us with the opportunity to talk about social media framed as a public relations challenge.
We will be able to focus on its potential for and impact on our profession.
How we can extend our capabilities by embracing social media.
How we can enhance our careers.
How we can better serve our clients.
And how we can then take our best thoughts forward into the broader discussion with others.
Ensuring that public relations is well represented.
Ensuring that public relations is in a leadership position in exploring and applying social media.

Who Killed the Newspaper?

“A GOOD newspaper, I suppose, is a nation talking to itself,” mused Arthur Miller in 1961.
...there is every sign that Arthur Miller's national conversation will be louder than ever.

In future, argues Carnegie, some high-quality journalism will also be backed by non-profit organizations. Already, a few respected news organizations sustain themselves that way—including the Guardian, the Christian Science Monitor and National Public Radio. An elite group of serious newspapers available everywhere online, independent journalism backed by charities, thousands of fired-up bloggers and well-informed citizen journalists: there is every sign that Arthur Miller's national conversation will be louder than ever.

Where Are All the Mobile Internet Users?

eMarketer writes:

According to a new report from Telephia, 34.6 million US mobile phone subscribers accessed the Internet from a wireless device in June 2006. With eMarketer estimating the US mobile phone population at approximately 213 million in 2006, that equates to only 16% of mobile phone subscribers. Considering the widespread use of mobile data and Internet services in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, 16% seems remarkably low and once again confirms the US as being very much a PC-centric Internet market.
